Class Description:

Embracing Shadow: Painting the Poetry of Light
A One-Day Outdoor Workshop

Light is elusive — shifting by the minute, transforming color, softening edges, and redefining form. For many artists, it can feel impossible to capture. In this immersive one-day outdoor workshop, we’ll explore how to paint light not by chasing brightness alone, but by understanding and embracing shadow.

Together, we’ll examine how contrast, value relationships, and temperature shifts create the illusion of luminosity. You’ll learn how darkness gives light its power — how depth, atmosphere, and mood are built through thoughtful observation and bold simplification.

Through demonstration and guided painting time, we’ll focus on:

  • Seeing value before color
  • Simplifying complex scenes into strong light-and-shadow patterns
  • Using edges to suggest atmosphere
  • Creating glow through contrast rather than detail

This workshop is designed for painters who want to deepen their understanding of light and bring greater drama and subtlety to their work. Whether you work in oils, acrylic, or watercolor, you’ll leave with practical tools — and a fresh way of seeing — that will transform how you approach painting outdoors.

Biographical Information:

Michele Byrne is an impressionistic oil painter celebrated for her bold, colorful palette knife and brush technique. She is known for capturing the essence of light — whether in a vibrant café, street scene, or landscape. Since moving to Santa Fe in 2020, she has seamlessly integrated the rich, luminous palette of the American Southwest into her signature style.

Her work has garnered significant national recognition, including being featured on the January 2020 cover of PleinAir Magazine, accompanied by a dedicated eight-page article. Michele has earned numerous plein air and studio awards and is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and the Plein Air Artists of New Mexico. She also maintains active memberships with OPA, NMWA, PAAC, and NOAPS.

As a Royal Talens North America Artist Ambassador and sought-after instructor, Michele shares her expertise through in-person and online workshops, mentorships, and classes across the U.S. and Europe. Her instructional techniques are further showcased in three PaintTubeTV videos, including Palette Knife Cityscapes.

Michele is represented by Reinert Fine Art (Charleston, SC) and James R. Ross Fine Art (Indianapolis, IN). She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Design from Kutztown University and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
