What to Expect:  The parking lot to the Continental Divide trailhead is large and can accommodate perhaps a dozen vehicles.  From the parking lot, you can see views of the distant Zuni Mountains plus closer ridges that eventually lead up to Mount Taylor. If you hike up the trail a bit, the views are even more dramatic, and for painters looking for closer subjects, interesting twisted junipers and rocky outcrops.  There is little shade at the trailhead, but up the trail there are small trees that afford some protection.  If you tire of painting the beautiful view, you can continue farther up the road where there are pullouts.  Where the road splits off for La Mosca and other parts of Mount Taylor, there are excellent views there as well.

There are no facilities at the trailhead.  However, five miles up the road (547) is the USFS Coal Mine Campground with pit toilets.

The Plan:  We'll meet at 9 a.m. Plan on painting all day and bring a bag lunch.  For those who want to spend the night, your host plans to camp at the Coal Mine Campground. It is a small campground with paved pads and a self-pay system.  Other than the pit toilets, there are no services.  You can reserve a space on-line.

For more information about regularly scheduled paintouts visit the NEW Paintouts page.

We will be watching for changes in the New Mexico Covid guidelines to be in compliance with them and will let you know when they change. For now we know:

  1. Masks are required
  2. Six feet apart
  3. “Avoid crowds” – no limit is given on numbers
  4. Cars also should be parked six feet apart
  5. Any visitors from out-of-state must self-quarantine for two weeks.

But since the parking is somewhat limited we will be setting a limit on the number of registrants. We will keep a wait-list. And please do write to Michael as indicated, with any questions, but also to let him know of your interest. And the registration list will be available to all as well.

Let us hope that by September all will be much better.

Safe painting, everyone.

Note  before you complete your paint out registration you will need to check the box asserting that during this pandemic, the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico is released from covid-related liability.
