This oft-forgotten pocket of the Southwest is wildly diverse in attractions. The Lincoln County area surrounding the Billy the Kid Trail is rich in history. It has been home to Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County War, the Mescalero Apache tribe, Kit Carson, “Black Jack” Pershing, the Buffalo Soldiers, the world’s richest quarter horse race and Smokey Bear. This section of the southern Rockies is no less fascinating in its natural beauty. Flanked by the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains, the area offers geography to inspire the creative impulse.
