Diablo Canyon
NW of Santa Fe

Located northwest of Santa Fe, Diablo Canyon has steep cliffs and huge boulders strewn along a sandy wash, which meanders along the base of the cliffs. If you follow along the wash for about a mile, you will end up at the Rio Grande, where there are also fine scenes to paint. There are pinon and juniper trees with scrub oak, apache plume, cholla cactus and grasses. Views within the canyon include the fantastic cliffs and boulders and distant views include the Jemez Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east.

There are no restroom facilities. Plan to bring plenty of water and a lunch. This is a rutted, sandy road so drive an appropriate vehicle. Carpooling is recommended.

Meet at the parking area for the Diablo Canyon trail.

Directions from Santa Fe on the 599 Bypass (from Santa Fe, Taos or Albuquerque):
1. Take NM-599 (Santa Fe Bypass, Relief Route or Veteran's Memorial Highway) to the Camino La Tierra exit.
2. Go north at the exit toward Calle Nopal / Las Campanas.
3. Turn right at Camino La Tierra (CR-77S) and head northwest for about 2.3 miles.
4. Then go slightly to the left at Camino La Tierra (CR-77N) and continue for 2.5 miles.
5. Turn right onto Old Buckman Road, a washboardy dirt road.
6. Follow the road for about 7.4 miles. You will see the opening of Diablo Canyon on the left (west).
7. Turn left on the road that heads toward the canyon and ends at a parking area at the head of the canyon.
