This legendary shrine is one of the most visited churches in New Mexico, attracting over 300,000 visitors each year and thousands of devotees participating in Easter pilgrimages. The Santuario de Chimayo was built in 1816 on earth that was believed to be sacred and possessing miraculous healing powers. It has beautiful grounds, views of fields, and an interesting cemetery.
Chimayo is about 24 miles northeast of Santa Fe and about 40 miles south of Taos. Restroom facilities are available on the Santuario grounds. Please note that there are several places to eat very close to Santuario and participants might consider eating together at one of these establishments. Registrants for this event will be sent greater detail about where to eat.
Directions from Santa Fe:
1. Go north on US 285 to Espanola. 2. At Espanola, take NM 76 east for 10 miles to Chimayo.
3. Turn right (south) at Chimayo and follow the road to the Santuario.
4. The main parking lot for the Santuario is south and east of the church, so continue past the Santuario and watch for signs to the parking lot which will be on your left.
Directions from Taos:
1. Go south on NM 68 to Espanola.
2. Turn east (left) on NM 76 for about 10 miles to Chimayo.
3. Turn right (south) at Chimayo and follow the road to the Santuario.
4. The main parking lot for the Santuario is south and east of the church, so continue past the Santuario and watch for signs to the parking lot which will be on your left.
