    CNN Travel Spotlight

From Carla: I am delighted that my art studio and gallery has been invited to be a stop on the Albuquerque Old Town Art Tours, conducted every Thursday afternoon from 1 to 3 pm starting July 7th. Elaine Ritchel, the owner and founder of Santa Fe Art Tours, is now providing engaging, interactive art tours in Historic Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico. Starting at the Albuquerque Museum, the tour wanders through the sculpture garden into Patio Escondido, once home to the Sagrada, a sacred arts school founded by Dominican Sister Giotto Moots in 1969, and location of my art studio and gallery. Visitors can experience the working art studio of a Local Treasure! Then the tour meanders through charming neighborhoods, hidden courtyards, off-the-beaten path art venues, and landmark museums and galleries.

    Partial post:

"To behold Beauty dignifies your life, it heals you and calls you out beyond the smallness of your own self-limitation to experience new horizons. To experience beauty is to have your life enlarged."
    John O'Donohue

In Paris I encountered beauty everywhere I looked; the food, fashion and art were always presented with an attention and appreciation to beauty. Douglas and I had an amazing trip in France, it was a life changing for me in many ways. Over the next few months, I want to share with you the beauty we enjoyed in art, food and fashion.

Paris is the city of Art and Museums, and we were determined to visit our top three choices, the Musée d'Orsay, L'Orangerie, and the Musée Marmottan Monet. The Musée d'Orsay, is an architectural delight! I was astounded at how they took an old train station and built a museum around the structure  to incorporate much of the original character. The light coming into the first floor area danced over the sculptural collection and invited you to wander t through this area like an outdoor garden. This could have been a full day of exploration, however we had our intentions set on the fifth floor, the home of the Impressionists and Post-impressionist collections.

Where we found room after room curated beautiful, each telling the story of the artists and the evolution of Impressionism.  Works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Manet, and few lesser known artists, Caillebotte, Guillaumin. The flow of rooms leads the viewer into the evolution of Post-Impressionist, with works by Seurat, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Toulouse-Lautrec.

    Vincent Van Gogh, L'Italienne

This moment, captured by Fay who was intrigued by my intensity said I had to stop and take a photo. "I was taken by the beauty of one red head looking at another" she said.  Every day we are stopped by simple moments of beauty and hopefully pause long enough to take it in.

The story of L'Italienne: This woman is without doubt Agostina Segatori (1843-1910), a former model of Corot, Gérôme and Manet with whom Van Gogh seems to have had a brief love affair a few months before this portrait was painted. During his time in Paris, between March 1886 and February 1888, he was initiated into the scientific color-theories developed by the Neo-impressionists. He was also profoundly interested in Japanese etchings, and in this portrait, Van Gogh offers a very personal synthesis of these two influences.
Several elements are reminiscent of Japanese prints: the asymmetrical border, the stylisation of the character in a portrait with neither shadows nor perspective, the monochrome background... But instead of the refined touch of Eastern aesthetics Van Gogh employs an energetic treatment, which results in an impression of almost primitive might.
The Neo-impressionists juxtaposed complementary colors in order to achieve intensity. Here, Van Gogh did likewise, associating reds with greens and blues with oranges but instead of the pointillist brush-stroke characteristic of Seurat and Signac, he uses a criss-cross of overlapping nervous hatching.
    From: Musée d'Orsay website

The colors are violent, expressive, revealing Van Gogh
to be a precursor of Fauvism.

    WINDOW IN TIME

    L. Heath [Linda] Fine Art,
    Fusionism and Southwest Landscape Paintings

From Linda: Wonderful news! My art is being featured this month in the:

     New Mexico Artists Directory.

Growing up in New Mexico, Heath has always been fascinated by the blending of ancient cultures here.  In addition, the future has always beckoned brightly to her through images from NASA’s deep space telescopes.  Now, with the next chapter of private space exploration developing rapidly, Heath has been inspired to create a new type of art called “Fusionism” or “Fusionist Art”.  Fusionism is a new art movement that blurs the lines among different cultures, fuses old and new painting media, and mixes human versus robotic-generated work. It is a perfect blend of her technical skills with ancient techniques and ideas.   I am inspired by ancient native cultures, digital images from NASA's Hubble space telescope, and the opening of Spaceport America in New Mexico.

"White Dove (Peace Dove)," acrylic on board, 10 x 10 in. — Judith Howells

PAPNM member, Judy Howells, has organized a Colors for Ukraine exhibition with the  Martha's Vineyard Art Association, May 27 - Jun 3.

You may read the article in the Martha's Vineyard newspaper here:   https://www.mvtimes.com/2022/05/25/colors-for-ukraine/

    Also visit Judy's website: http://judyhowells.com/.

Colors for Ukraine,” a benefit exhibit at Old Sculpin Gallery, May 27 to June 3. 58 Dock St., Edgartown. 508-627-4881, oldsculpingallery.org.

Sunflowers are currently in bloom at the Old Sculpin Gallery in Edgartown. Decorating the walls of the historic gallery, operated by the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association (MVAA), are dozens of images of the brilliant, bright yellow flowers whose image has come to represent support for the Ukrainian people.

The sunflower is not only the national flower of Ukraine, it has also come to be used as a symbol of peace. (In June 1996, ministers from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine marked Ukraine’s nuclear weapon disarmament by planting sunflowers at the Pervomaysk missile base.)

As a show of support for the people of Ukraine, the MVAA chose to kick off its summer season with a fundraising show titled “Colors for Ukraine,” featuring work by 20-plus of the gallery’s members who, in keeping with the theme of the show, are offering work focusing either on sunflowers and/or the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The artists will donate a minimum of 20 percent of their proceeds to an organization called World Central Kitchen, which has since the beginning of the war provided 25 million meals to the people of Ukraine. Their motto is “Food is a universal right.”

While many of the artists chose to represent sunflowers in their contributions to the show, others have used the color theme in a variety of creative ways. Theresa Yuan’s oil painting, “Stone Walls,” features a striated blue sky above the painting’s focal point, with a field of yellow daffodils below. Judith Howells, who came up with the idea and curated the show, chose another symbol of peace — a white dove — for her contribution. Standing in front of a golden orb against a vivid blue background — the image both represents an ideal and pays homage to the colors of Mother Nature to be found in the sky and sun.

Brian Kirkpatrick found a clever way to honor the theme and the cause. His painting “President Zelensky” shows the Ukraine leader sitting in a yellow chair in a blue room holding a white rabbit on his lap. The large painting, done in Kirkpatrick’s signature colorful whimsical style, provides a bold graphic art–influenced image.

The show includes photography and ceramics as well as paintings. Incorporated in 1954, the nonprofit MVAA is the Island’s oldest art organization. Its mission is “to increase facilities of art education, create interest in the arts, make an art center for the whole Island, establish a permanent collection, and preserve an old landmark.” Housed in a former boatbuilder’s shed, the gallery has been providing a space for exhibitions and workshops for almost 70 years. The MVAA also fosters art education, and provides scholarships for local high school students.

Howells (who is also the membership chairman) notes that the member artists responded enthusiastically to her call for participants. “It’s really about the members showing support, using art as a way to show a sense of support to people who are enduring a sudden displacement. We want our artwork to send a powerful message of hope and support to those suffering in this humanitarian crisis.”
