Outdoor Art Workshop

Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, 2019, 9 am to 5 PM
Workshop Fee: $195

In this two-day workshop taught by instructors Carla Forrest and Dee Sanchez, you will experience the joys and camaraderie of creating artwork en plein air – in the outdoors. Beginners and all media are welcome. If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at art, now is the time!

This workshop provides the foundation for creating artworks in oil, wet, or dry media en plein air. The focus is on preparation, direct observation, fundamentals of design, and field drawing.

Instructor: Carla Forrest,, (505) 410-2444

Contemporary artist Carla Forrest paints the New West in her spectral luminescent works, inspired by direct observation of nature and life. Honored as a Local Treasure by the Albuquerque Arts Business Association, Carla was the first elected President of the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, now an internationally recognized non-profit dedicated to preserving and promoting painting en plein air – in the open air or outdoors. Carla obtained her Bachelor in studio art from State University of New York and Master of Science in Teaching Visual Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Instructor: Dee Sanchez,, (505) 792-1030

Dee Sanchez is an award-winning plein painter with work held in corporate and private collections world-wide, poster artist for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and Weems Artfest, and plein air painter, following the ever-changing light. “I love nothing more than throwing my gear in the car, heading out to a particular place in my beautiful state, and setting up my equipment. Stopping to take a deep breath and viewing the beautiful and magical New Mexico scenery, I want all to feel transported as I do – aware and in awe of this precious environment that must be honored in pigment and paint!”

Day One: Carla and Dee will cover essential topics - everything you need to know to start creating art outdoors, such as clothing, equipment, materials, supplies, photo and drawing references, composition, and resources. Lunch will be provided.

Day Two: Carla and Dee will demonstrate—painting the same scene side by side—at a local trailhead in the morning. A brown bag lunch and afternoon session will be a held in beautiful vineyard garden with students drawing or paining along with the instructors.

The workshop is limited to 20 students. The workshop fee is $195 plus NM GRT and includes lunch on the first day.
