Tseyi Canyon by artist Damien Gonzales

    (Oil on Canvas)

Artist Damien Gonzales divides his time between painting outdoors and in the studio. Damien is an oil painter -- focusing primarily on landscape painting. According toSouthwest Art magazine, Damien has been attracted to landscape painting ever since he visited a Santa Fe gallery and viewed a stunning canvas depicting a large rock wall at the bottom of the Grand Canyon with the Colorado River flowing along its base. He notes that he enjoys representational works and aspects of impressionism that impart a sublime quality to a painting.

In the Shadow of Mummy Cave by artist Damien Gonzales

    (Oil on Mounted Linen)

Gonzales has stated that he enjoys the spontaneity required to quickly capture the essence of a location-- referring to, "The most accurate color and value information possible and the other transient elements that are present only for an hour or two, at most." Damien notes that paintings completed in the field are sometimes framed and shown as they were after leaving a location -- others are used to produce additional paintings back in his studio.

Art critic Brian Sherwin, Editor of The Art Edge, offered some thoughts about Damien's oil landscape paintings. Sherwin said, "Damien's plein air and studio works capture the majestic power of nature. He has an eye for awe-inspiring locations... areas that reveal the intricate beauty of the natural world. Each painting reminds us that we should not take the beauty in our world for granted."

Rarely is someone so talented that they are inducted into the Pastel Hall of Fame by the Pastel Society of America. Even more rare, at the time of this induction only three living artists had been given the honor, joining the company of greats like Mary Cassatt and Daniel Chester French.

Albert Handell is not just a superstar pastel painter, not just a master artist, he is an artist’s artist, commanding the highest respect among his peers. In 2000, the Pastel Society of the West Coast presented him with the organization’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award for Pastel.

PleinAir magazine is pleased to welcome Pastel Hall of Fame Artist Albert Handell to the faculty of the 4th Annual Plein Air Convention & Expo, which will be held April 13-17, 2015.
Handell will be demonstrating his technique at the convention, as well as working with painters in the field.

At an early age, Handell could be found illustrating the streets of Brooklyn with chalk. He began formal studies at 16, and in 1954 he enrolled at the Art Students League in New York City to study drawing and anatomy with Louis Priscilla and Robert Ward Johnson. Handell currently lives and paints in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since 1961, he has had over 30 one-man shows and has received more than 70 prizes and awards. This is a great opportunity to watch Albert Handell in person and capture the essence of his amazing skills.
